God is the Author of Life, Sunshine Part 1 - God is Light
"...God is light and in Him is no darkness at all." -1 John 1:5
God is light. God created light, all of it. Light is the essence of who God is. What is light? What an amazing thought to try and wrap our heads around. Light is energy. It is the life of God. God created light energy before He created the sun. Isn't that fascinating?
Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So, the evening and the morning made up the first day. -Genesis 1:3-5
Briefly picture this in your mind. You have a seed that falls to the ground. A few years later, you have a giant, mighty oak tree. How? Energy! Simple elements of water, light, and soil were needed, but energy was what made that tree. The life of God made that tree. Water and soil you can touch, taste, and feel, but what about light? Trees, plants, animals, and people are not possible without the life of God, and light energy is a driving force behind this understanding.
After creating light, and therefore energy and physics, God created the sun. As stated in Genesis 1:16, God created a greater light to rule the day (the sun) and a lesser light to rule the night (the moon). In our discussion of the sun the other day, my wife mentioned how God gave us this container of energy called the sun. It's an expression of the life of God, shining with brilliance and power. God had to contain the light and give it to us as a free gift for life on this planet. There is more than just the sun; there is the Father of Lights who dwells in unapproachable light, as stated in the Bible. Thank you, God, for the sun. But even more, thank You for You!
Our life on this earth is governed by God's design. All life on this planet exists exclusively based on alignment with how God designed our world to function. The sun is crucial to our existence, and life as we know it would not exist without our sun.
The sun is so powerful that ancient cultures worshipped the sun as a god, and the Bible clearly warns against idol worship. Yet, although we worship God the Creator and not creation itself (think paganism, mother earth worship, etc.), the sun was still given to us as a heritage, which means inheritance, birthright, or legacy. It is a gift from God, the gift of light and life, a very reflection of His nature. Wouldn't it make sense to be filled with the essence of God's creation?
"And take heed, lest you lift your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun, the moon and the stars, all the host of heaven, you feel driven to worship them and serve them, which the Lord your God has given to all the peoples under the whole heaven as a heritage." Deuteronomy 4:19
Does your body run on sunlight?
Are you running on the power of the sun, arguably one of the most powerful and life-giving things God created? Are we designed to be solar panels of light?
Think of it this way: We have discovered that vitamin D is crucial to human function. It helps prevent sickness and disease. It is crucial to take in the winter and even all year long. It aids in preventing and reversing all types of cancer, and you can't have strong and healthy bones without it (remember the disease rickets?). Yet we often take this in a pill and are told to avoid the sun because it is dangerous. Vitamin D production comes from the sun only!
Would you have food without sunlight? Would there be animals without sunlight? Is it possible for you to exist on this planet without it? Do plants, trees, flowers, bees, birds, animals in nature, or your pets avoid the sun? Do they wear sunglasses and sunscreen to protect themselves from the dangers of the sun?
They do the opposite. Animals strive to reach sunlight, and your dog or cat will find that one little two-inch strip of sunlight coming through the window just to lay in it. Plants bend, reaching for the light. I am growing sunflower sprouts on my kitchen table as I write this, and all of the growing sprouts are angled towards the window, desperate for their Creator to give them more life, grow stronger, and grow taller. Are we?
Action Step
Simply pay more attention to how your plants or pets reach for the sunlight. If all things, including us, were made by God, does this make sense that sunlight would be healthy for us? In what ways can you increase the amount of light entering your home to create a healthier environment?
